Mammals

Specimens in a project that uses the Mammalogy catalog format show the mammal measurement form. Sex, life stage, and weight units work the same way in every taxon group; see Measurements.

  • Total length (mm): the total length from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail.
  • Tail length (mm): the length of the tail from the base to the tip.
  • Head and body length (mm): auto-calculated from Total length (mm) - Tail length (mm).
  • Tail/HB length: auto-calculated from Tail length (mm) / Head and body length (mm).
  • Hind foot length (mm): the length of the hind foot from the base to the tip of the claw.
  • Ear length (mm): ear length.
  • Weight: specimen weight in the selected unit.
  • Accuracy: measurement accuracy or reason measurements may be inaccurate.
  • Sex: select from the configured specimen-sex vocabulary.
  • Life stage: select from the configured life-stage vocabulary.
  • Remarks: additional notes about measurements.
  • Male reproductive fields: testis position, testis length and width, and epididymis appearance.
  • Female reproductive fields: vagina opening, pubic symphysis, reproductive stage, mammae condition, mammae counts, placental scar counts, embryo counts, and embryo crown-rump length.

When bat fields are enabled, the form adds forearm length, tibia length, echolocation type, maximum and minimum frequency, frequency at maximum energy, and duration.

Mammal catalogs show parasite-detection fields and the parasite tab. See Specimen Parts.
