Glossary

NAHPU documentation and the NAHPU app are translated into Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, and Indonesian with AI assistance and reviewed by people. This page is the shared reference for how NAHPU and natural history terms are rendered in each language, so the same concept does not appear under three different names.

The NAHPU app is translated into the same languages as the documentation, and readers usually run it in the language they are reading. When a sentence names a control the reader must find on screen — a button, a field label, a menu entry, a card title — write it inside backticks exactly as the app shows it in that language, and translate the prose around it:

en Select `Add personnel`, then choose `Import`.
pt Selecione `Adicionar membro da equipe` e escolha `Importar`.
es Seleccione `Agregar personal` y elija `Importar`.
id Pilih `Tambah personel`, lalu pilih `Impor`.

Copy the label from the app's translation file for that language, lib/l10n/app_<code>.arb in the NAHPU app repository, or from the app itself with Settings → Language set to that language. Do not write your own translation of a label: a reader looks for the exact text on screen, so a better wording that the app does not use will not be found. If the label reads wrong, fix it in the app as described in App translation, then use the corrected text in both places.

Some screens are not translated yet and still show English labels. Keep those labels in English inside backticks until the app translates them.

When the same word is used as an ordinary noun rather than as the name of a control, translate it as ordinary prose: the field is ID do local in Portuguese, and "record the site coordinates" becomes "registre as coordenadas do local".

Scientific terms follow the receiving language

Section titled “Scientific terms follow the receiving language”

Taxonomic ranks, Latin names, and collection vocabulary have established forms in each language. Use them. Leaving class, order, family, and epithet in English inside an Indonesian sentence is not more precise — it is harder to read for the person the translation is for.

Italicize genus and species names in every language, and never translate them.

Darwin Core, dwc:scientificName, dwc:MaterialEntity, dwc:preparations, GBIF, IUCN, CITES, ORCID, UUID, and file formats such as .xlsx, JSON.GZ, and TAR.GZ are proper names. Never translate them, and never translate a dwc: term into a local phrase in running text.

If a concept has no settled equivalent, keep the English term in backticks and explain it once in the receiving language. Add the decision to the table below so the next translator makes the same choice.

Role names that appear in the personnel form — Cataloger, Determiner only, Preparator only, None — are stored values, not translated labels, so the app shows them in English in every language. Keep them in English inside backticks and use the translated word in prose.
